EWG Verified®is one of the most transparent and rigorous programs for nontoxic, clean and safe testing and licensing, so we’re proud that our Free & Clear Bio Laundry Detergent is sealed with the EWG Verified® mark. But what does it mean, exactly?
To get the EWG Verified® mark, a cleaning product must meet several criteria:
Complete Ingredient Transparency
Products must disclose every intentionally added ingredient on the label—including those used in fragrances, which are often hidden under the generic term "fragrance" in conventional products. This level of disclosure goes far beyond what regulations require.
Free from Chemicals of Concern
Products cannot contain any ingredients on EWG's "Unacceptable" list, which includes chemicals linked to health issues, ecotoxicity, or contamination concerns. They must also comply with EWG's "Restricted" list, which sets limits on certain ingredients based on authoritative scientific bodies. Environmental Safety
Formulations must be designed to minimize harm to both people and the environment, meeting air quality standards and demonstrating biodegradability.
Manufacturing Excellence
Companies must develop and follow good manufacturing practices and pass microbial challenge tests to ensure product stability and safety.
Ongoing Accountability
Brands commit to reporting any product safety issues to relevant regulatory agencies and to EWG itself.
Why does it matter?
In the same way leaning products are integrated into our daily lives—they don’t disappear after they’re used. Every product that goes down the drain eventually makes its way into our water systems, and at home, they’re in close contact with your skin, on your clothes, and even the air you breathe inside. Conventional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals that can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and long-term health concerns—particularly for children, pets, and those with sensitivities.
EWG Verification addresses what the organization calls the "virtual black box" problem in the cleaning industry. Many products on store shelves don't fully disclose their ingredients, making it nearly impossible for consumers to make informed choices; the EWG Verified® mark cuts through this ambiguity.
