Meet the Los Angeles-based entrepreneur and home design expert Maggie Holladay. We discussed her journey from New York to LA, how she spends most of her time, her best tricks for elevating your home during the holidays, and more. Read the full interview below.

Where did you grow up and what were you interested in as a kid?

I grew up in San Diego. Besides playing tennis pretty competitively, I was the girl in high school who spent 95% of her time on Tumblr and ordering clothes online. I was obsessed with fashion and genuinely thought that would always be my career.

What were you up to before Claude Home? What are you up to now?

Before Claude, I was a fashion assistant in NYC. It completely burnt me out—I’m honestly still recovering. The industry had a level of stress that stopped inspiring me. I moved to LA almost five years ago, and it really shifted me. Now I spend my time doing heated workouts, biohacking, and baking sourdough loaves like everyone else here. Oh and being obsessed with my dog Monster.

Was there a specific point at which your interest in interiors began?

It probably started with my Tumblr addiction. I was very into Scandinavian minimalism and IKEA-core. While working in fashion, I slowly grew more curious about interiors, and one day it just clicked — the world of furniture blew my mind. I loved the steadiness of objects: you buy a sofa once and it can stay with you forever. Fashion felt too in-and-out. Interiors felt like a place where I had more opportunity and a real path to becoming my own boss.

Any particular room in a house you’re most excited by?

I think offices excite me the most. It’s where people stash all the things they really love but that don’t fit the “design direction” of the rest of their home. It’s always a bit of a hodgepodge—which to me is the most fun and interesting.

Do you have any tips for elevating a home environment when hosting, especially during the holiday season?

Dim lighting, good music, and ashtrays ready to be used. Perfect tableware is fun to look at, but it doesn’t make the night any more special than it would be without it.

How would you describe your personal approach to design? Any tips for bringing personality into a space?

Honestly, I struggle with this sometimes. Being around so much furniture can confuse my own style. Lately my philosophy has been: “If you like it enough, just buy it.” The homes we all love most are always the ones filled by collectors—pieces you’re drawn to for reasons you don’t have to explain.

What does your ideal holiday gathering look like?

A bunch of friends laughing in a living room with a Christmas tree. Nostalgic, warm, and like you’re creating new traditions together. It’s that moment where you feel like, “Oh… we’re actually grown up now.”
